How to Make Outdoor Furniture Cushion Covers

Outdoor furniture cushions are essential for creating a comfortable and inviting outdoor space. They provide cushioning for seating, add a pop of color, and protect your furniture from the elements. However, outdoor cushions can get dirty and faded over time, and it may be more affordable to create new covers rather than buy new cushions altogether. 1. Gather Your Materials

Before you begin sewing, gather all the necessary materials. The specific materials will vary depending on the size and shape of your cushions, but here is a general list:

Fabric: Choose a durable and weather-resistant fabric like Sunbrella, outdoor canvas, or treated cotton.
Thread: Select a color that blends with your fabric. Polyester thread is a good choice for outdoor use.
Sewing machine: A standard sewing machine will suffice.
Scissors: Use sharp scissors to cut the fabric accurately.
Measuring tape: Measure the cushions carefully to ensure a perfect fit.
Fabric marker: Use a fabric marker to mark the fabric before cutting.
Pins: Secure the fabric together with pins before sewing.
Zipper: A zipper is optional, but it allows for easy access to the cushion for cleaning or replacing the cushion.

2. Measure and Cut the Fabric

The first step is to measure your cushions accurately. Measure the length, width, and height of each cushion. Add seam allowances of at least 1/2 inch to each measurement. For example, if your cushion is 20 inches long, add 1 inch for seam allowance, resulting in a fabric piece that is 21 inches long. Cut two pieces of fabric for each cushion according to your measurements.

Before you begin cutting, lay the fabric flat and smooth out any wrinkles. Use a ruler and fabric marker to mark the measurements on the wrong side of the fabric. Once all the markings are in place, carefully cut the fabric with sharp scissors.

3. Sew the Cushion Cover

Once you have cut all the fabric pieces, you are ready to start sewing. There are two main methods for sewing cushion covers: with a zipper or with a simple seam.

With a Zipper: If you choose to use a zipper, sew the zipper along one side of one of the fabric pieces, leaving an opening at the top and bottom. Then, place the two fabric pieces right sides together and sew along the remaining three sides, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the cover inside out and insert the cushion. Finally, hand sew the opening closed.

4. Finishing Touches
