How to Change an Outdoor Wall Sconce

Outdoor wall sconces are a great way to add light and style to your home's exterior. They can be used to illuminate walkways, patios, and other outdoor areas. If your outdoor wall sconce has stopped working or you simply want to update its look, you can easily replace it yourself.

Materials You'll Need

  • Replacement wall sconce
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Phillips head screwdriver

Safety First

Before you begin, make sure to turn off the power to the wall sconce at the circuit breaker. This will prevent you from being electrocuted.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Remove the old wall sconce. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the sconce to the wall. Carefully pull the sconce away from the wall, being careful not to damage the wires.
  2. Disconnect the wires. Use wire cutters to cut the wires that connect the sconce to the power supply. Be sure to cut the wires as close to the sconce as possible.
  3. Remove the mounting bracket. Most wall sconces are mounted to a mounting bracket that is attached to the wall. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the mounting bracket to the wall. Then, carefully remove the mounting bracket.
  4. Install the new mounting bracket. Place the new mounting bracket over the wires and use screws to secure it to the wall. Make sure that the mounting bracket is level and secure.
  5. Connect the wires. Connect the wires from the new sconce to the wires from the power supply. Be sure to connect the black wire to the black wire, the white wire to the white wire, and the green wire to the ground wire. Use electrical tape to insulate the connections.
  6. Mount the new sconce. Carefully lift the new sconce over the mounting bracket and secure it with screws. Make sure that the sconce is level and secure.
  7. Turn on the power. Go to the circuit breaker and turn on the power to the wall sconce. The new sconce should now be working.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a licensed electrician to change your outdoor wall sconce.
  • Make sure to choose a replacement sconce that is compatible with the existing wiring.
  • Be sure to turn off the power to the wall sconce before you begin working on it.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and be sure to make all of the connections securely.
