How to Make Outdoor Chair Cushions

Creating custom outdoor chair cushions can add a personal touch to your outdoor space and enhance comfort. This project is achievable for individuals with basic sewing skills and offers the opportunity to personalize cushions with desired fabrics, colors, and sizes. The following steps provide a clear guide for crafting durable and stylish outdoor cushions.

Choosing Materials

The first step in making outdoor chair cushions is selecting appropriate materials that will withstand the elements. For the cushion filling, consider using high-density foam or polyester fiberfill. These materials provide good support and resilience, resisting flattening and sagging over time. For the cushion covers, opt for weather-resistant fabrics such as Sunbrella, outdoor canvas, or acrylic. These fabrics are designed to resist fading, water damage, and mold, making them ideal for outdoor use.

When choosing fabrics, look for water-repellent and fade-resistant options. Sunbrella fabric is a popular choice for outdoor cushions due to its durability and colorfastness. Alternatively, outdoor canvas and acrylic fabrics offer similar properties at a lower price point. For a more natural look, consider using outdoor-rated cotton or linen, but note that these fabrics may require more frequent cleaning and maintenance.

Cutting and Sewing

Once materials are selected, measure the chair seat to determine the required dimensions for the cushion. Add seam allowances to the measurements, typically 1/2 inch to 1 inch, depending on the thickness of the fabric. Cut out two identical pieces of fabric for the cushion cover. If desired, use a pattern or template to create a more elaborate design. For a simple square or rectangular cushion, use a ruler and fabric shears to cut the fabric panels.

Next, cut the foam or fiberfill to the same size as the fabric panels. For a more professional look, use a sharp knife or electric cutter for precise cuts. Position the foam or fiberfill inside the fabric panels, making sure the edges align. Pin the fabric panels together along the edges, leaving a small opening for turning the cushion right-side out.

Sew around the perimeter of the cushion cover, using a strong sewing thread and a straight stitch. Leave the opening unsewn for now. Once sewn, carefully turn the cushion right-side out through the opening. Use a seam ripper or a small, blunt object to push out any corners or creases. Finally, hand-stitch or use a sewing machine to close the opening.

Finishing Touches

After sewing the cushion cover, consider adding additional details like piping or a zipper for easy removal and cleaning. Piping can be made by sewing a strip of contrasting fabric around the edges of the cover, adding a decorative and functional element. A zipper can be sewn along one side of the cover, allowing for the removal of the filling for washing or replacement.

Before placing the cushions on the chairs, consider adding a waterproof liner to further protect the filling. These liners can be purchased or made from a waterproof fabric like vinyl or polyurethane. The liner can be sewn into a separate cover or simply placed over the filling before inserting it into the outer cover.

Finally, once the cushions are complete, enjoy the comfort and style they bring to your outdoor space. Regularly check the cushions for wear and tear and re-sew any loose seams or replace any torn fabric. If using outdoor-rated cotton or linen, consider washing the covers periodically to maintain their freshness.
